Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends approval of the resolution authorizing the Police Department to apply for and accept, if awarded, the Edward Byrne Grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for $27,388.00 to supplement costs associated with department equipment.

Analysis:

This grant will pay the cost for investigative department equipment for law enforcement purposes.  These funds will help supplement our current department equipment budget by providing much needed resources and equipment.   The grant funds will pay for the replacement of outdated equipment or provide funding for equipment the department needs but lacks the funding.  By agreeing, the city assumes no additional liability or additional costs.

Deadline for application is June 16^th.

Options:

1. Approve the resolution authorizing the application and acceptance of a federal grant of $27,388.00; or

2. Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

Fiscal Impact:

There is no matching requirement.  If this grant is awarded, there will be a positive effect on General Fund revenues. A budget adjustment will be processed to increase the Police Department budget and recognize the increased revenue.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE POLICE DEPARTMENT TO APPLY FOR AND ACCEPT, IF AWARDED, AN EDWARD BYRNE GRANT FROM THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE FOR $27,388.00 TO SUPPLEMENT COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH DEPARTMENT EQUIPMENT; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

            THAT the Police Department is hereby authorized to apply for and accept, if awarded, an Edward Byrne Grant from the U.S. Department of Justice for $27,388.00 to supplement costs associated with department equipment for replacement of outdated equipment or provide funding for new equipment,

 THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately.
