Subject: Resolution authorizing the Library Department to apply electronically for and accept, if awarded, a federal grant to fund a series of programs on Louisa May Alcott: the Woman behind Little Women
Staff Recommendation:
Staff recommends approval of the resolution authorizing the Library Department to electronically apply for and accept, if awarded, a grant of $2,500 from the Louisa May Alcott: the Woman behind Little Women Library Outreach Program of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Analysis:
This program will allow community residents the opportunity to participate in free library-sponsored programs that explore Louisa May Alcott’s life, her work, and her place in American culture. One program will be led by a scholar from Lake-Sumter Community College, and the Leesburg Heritage Museum will present a program on daily life in the Civil War. Another program will feature a viewing of the documentary film Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women, followed by facilitated discussion. The funds will be used for speakers’ honoraria, promotion, and publicity materials. There is no matching requirement.
The deadline for application is July 30, 2010. Applicants will be notified in December 2010.
Options:
1. Approve the resolution authorizing the Library Department to submit an electronic grant application to the National Endowment for the Humanities, or
2. Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate
Fiscal Impact:
There is no matching requirement. The funds of $2,500 will be received and expended in Fiscal Year 2010 – 2011.

RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE LIBRARY DEPARTMENT TO APPLY ELECTRONICALLY FOR AND ACCEPT, IF AWARDED, A GRANT FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES TO FUND A SERIES OF PROGRAMS ON LOUISA MAY ALCOTT: THE WOMAN BEHIND LITTLE WOMEN; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:
THAT the Library Department is hereby authorized to electronically apply and accept, if awarded, a grant with the National Endowment for the Humanities, whose address is Room 426, 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, D.C. 20506, for a library-sponsored series of pubic programs on the life and work of Louisa May Alcott.
THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately.
