Subject:                      Resolution approving the Memorandum of Understanding with Learning for Life for establishing a Fire Department Explorers Post

 

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends approving the Memorandum of Understanding with Learning for Life to establish an Explorers Post within the City’s Fire Department.

 

Analysis:

Fire Service Exploring is a worksite-based program for young men and women who have completed eighth grade and are 14 years of age, or 15 years of age but have not yet reached their 21st birthday.  Fire Service Explorer posts help youth gain insight into a variety of programs that offer hands-on career activities.  For young men and women who are interested in careers in the field of fire service, exploring offers experiential learning with lots of fun-filled, hands-on activities that promote the growth and development of adolescent youth.

 

By establishing an Explorers program for the City of Leesburg Fire Department, a service to the community is being created and the City has an opportunity to groom local talent to become firefighters serving their own community.

 

Options:

1.  Approve the Memorandum of Understanding with Learning for Life; or

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

 

Fiscal Impact: 

Expenditures for the Explorers Post in Leesburg will be minimal.  Insurance costs will be borne by the participant.  Donations from the community for this Explorer Post have been received and $872.00 earmarked for the program.  The City will not have any expense in association with this program.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR AND CITY CLERK TO EXECUTE THE MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH LEARNING FOR LIFE TO ESTABLISH AN EXPLORERS PROGRAM IN THE CITY'S FIRE DEPARTMENT; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

 

            THAT the Mayor and City Clerk are hereby authorized to execute an agreement  with Learning for Life (Central Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America), whose address is 1951 South Orange Blossom Trail  Apopka, Florida 32703, for allowing the City of Leesburg to operate a Fire Department Explorers Post.

 

             THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately.
