Subject:                      Resolution in support of keeping the Fruitland Park Post Office open

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends adopting the resolution supporting keeping the Fruitland Park Post Office open.

Analysis:

The City of Fruitland Park has requested assistance from the City of Leesburg in their effort to keep Fruitland Park Post Office open.  Fruitland Park Mayor Christopher Bell has asked that a resolution be passed by the Leesburg City Commission showing support for the continued operation of the Fruitland Park Post Office.

Options:

1.  Adopt the Resolution in support of keeping the Fruitland Park Post Office open; or

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

There is no fiscal impact associated with this Resolution.

RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA IN SUPPORT OF KEEPING THE FRUITLAND PARK POST OFFICE OPEN; KEEPING THE INDEPENDENCE AND IDENTITY OF FRUITLAND PARK ALIVE; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

            WHEREAS, the City of Fruitland Park has had a Post Office within its city limits since the early 1880’s; and

            WHEREAS, the City of Fruitland Park has worked diligently over the years to keep its identity and independence from the surrounding larger cities; and

            WHEREAS, the Post Office has always played, and continues to play, an important role in the City of Fruitland Park’s ability to keep its identity and independence from the surrounding larger cities; and

            WHEREAS, the Commission of the City of Fruitland Park has learned of the threat of the possible closure of the Fruitland Park Post Office.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

            Section 1.  The Leesburg City Commission supports the wishes of the City of Fruitland Park to keep its separate identity and independence from the surrounding larger cities.

            Section 2.  The Leesburg City Commission pledges its support in keeping the Fruitland Park Post Office open.

            Section 3.  This resolution shall become effective immediately.
