Subject:                      Resolution in support of keeping the Leesburg, Florida Haines Creek

Branch Post Office open

Analysis:

Pursuant to Commission direction at the August 1, 2011 Special City Commission Meeting, staff prepared the attached resolution in support of continued operation of the Leesburg Haines Creek Post Office.

Options:

1.  Adopt the Resolution in support of keeping the Haines Creek Post Office open; or

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

Fiscal Impact: 

There is no fiscal impact (to the City of Leesburg) associated with this Resolution.

RESOLUTION NO.__________

RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA, IN SUPPORT OF KEEPING THE LEESBURG, FLORIDA, HAINES CREEK POST OFFICE BRANCH  OPEN;  AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.                                                                   

            WHEREAS, the Haines Creek Branch Post Office is approximately seven miles from the larger downtown Leesburg Post Office on South 14^th Street (US  Hwy 27), and

WHEREAS, many citizens on the east side of Leesburg use the Haines Creek Branch Post Office as the location is more convenient and is a safety factor in not having to interface with the downtown traffic; and

            WHEREAS,   greater driving distances for essential services like Post Offices serve to clog roadways, increase consumption of gasoline, and decrease accessibility by transportation disadvantaged citizens;

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

            Section 1.  The Leesburg City Commission supports the continued operation of the Haines Creek Branch Post Office and encourages the United States Post Office to consider removing it from the proposed closure list.

            Section 2.  This resolution shall become effective immediately.

PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Commission of the City of Leesburg, Florida, at a regular meeting held the __8^th _ day of _August_ 2011.
