Subject:                      Resolution to School Board Letter requesting use of Dabney Elementary for a Charter School

 

 

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends adoption of the Resolution authorizing execution and delivery of the attached letter to Jimmy Connor, Chairman of the Lake County School Board requesting the use of Dabney Elementary as a charter school.

 

Analysis:

The Lake County School Board will soon decide what facilities and properties are no longer necessary for educational purposes, may be declared excess, and may be sold to raise funds.  The City of Leesburg wishes to make known its desire to utilize Dabney Elementary as a charter school, located in the city limits of Leesburg.  The City of Leesburg proposes to apply for a new charter school, remodel Dabney, hire staff and begin operating a K-5 elementary school beginning in August 2008.

 

Options:

1.  Approve the execution and delivery of said letter; or   

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

 

 

Fiscal Impact: None at this time.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA AUTHORIZING THE MAYOR AND CITY COMMISSION TO  EXECUTE AND THE CITY CLERK TO DELIVER A LETTER TO THE LAKE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD REQUESTING THE USE OF DABNEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR THE OPERATION OF A CHARTER SCHOOL; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

 

            THAT the Mayor and City Commission are hereby authorized to execute and the City Clerk to deliver the attached letter to Jimmy Connor, Chairman, LAKE COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD, whose address is 201 West Burleigh Boulevard, Tavares, Florida 32778, requesting the use of Dabney Elementary as a charter school.

 

             THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately.

 

PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Commission of the City of Leesburg, Florida, at a regular meeting held the  10th day of July, 2006
