Meeting Date:           October 9, 2006

From:                          Police Chief Bill Chrisman

Subject:                      Request for appropriation of forfeiture funds to purchase one Police Canine

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends approval of appropriation of Forfeiture Funds of $7,000 to fund the purchase of one (1) police canine.

The Leesburg Police Department currently employs four K-9 teams. These dogs are bred and selected solely as Police Canines.  The K-9 unit has been extremely successful since moving to the full service program (narcotics, tracking, officer protection, etc.).  Tommy, one of the K-9s,  is to be retired due to behavior problems.  The requested amount is higher than previous purchases because of the demand for trained canines due to Homeland Security requirements and needs in European countries.

1.  Approve the appropriation of forfeiture funds of $7,000.00

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

Fiscal Impact

The contemplated expenditure totals $7,000.00 and is an authorized use of law enforcement trust funds. Funding is available for this purpose in the forfeiture funds account
