Subject:                      Resolution Re-Naming Leesburg Regional Airport to Leesburg International Airport

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends changing the name of the airport from Leesburg Regional Airport to Leesburg International Airport.

Analysis:

On August 25, 1997, the Commission re-named the airport from Leesburg Municipal Airport to Leesburg Regional Airport.  The airport now has entered into an agreement with U.S. Customs and Border Protection - Department of Homeland Security to offer inspection (clearance) for aircraft that are returning from foreign countries to the continental United States.  The ability of returning aircraft to be inspected at Leesburg warrants the airport to be re-named to alert the aviation community and flying public that U.S. Customs and Border Protection service is available. 

The service at Leesburg will allow aircraft crews the ability to obtain an Overflight Permit, bypassing a port of entry and flying directly to Leesburg.  Direct flying saves flight time, landing gear cycle time, and jet engine cycle time, which results in less aircraft maintenance.  Having international status will bring more traffic into the airport, especially corporate aircraft, which will result in more revenue for the City of Leesburg due to increased fuel sales.

Options:

1.   Approve re-naming Leesburg Regional Airport to Leesburg International Airport. 

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA, RENAMING THE "LEESBURG REGIONAL AIRPORT" THE "LEESBURG INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT"; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

            THAT the Leesburg Regional Airport is hereby renamed and shall be known as the Leesburg International Airport.

 THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately.

PASSED AND ADOPTED by the City Commission of the City of Leesburg, Florida, at a regular meeting held the _23rd____ day of _October________ 2006.
