Subject:                      Resolution authorizing the Police Department to apply  for a Federal Grant from the Department of Justice

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends approval to authorize the Police Department to apply for and accept, if awarded, a Federal Grant with the Department of Justice to secure funding for a Victim’s Rights Advocate.

Analysis:

This grant will aid the victims of violent crimes and person crimes with resolution during recovery.  Currently Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney’s Office are the only agencies that have a Victim’s Rights Advocate.

Options:

1.  Approve application for and acceptance of a Federal Grant, if awarded, from the Department of Justice Victim’s Rights Advocate grant; or

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

Fiscal Impact: 

There is no fiscal impact to the FY 2006/2007 budget.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA, AUTHORIZING THE LEESBURG POLICE DEPARTMENT TO APPLY FOR AND ACCEPT, IF AWARDED, A FEDERAL GRANT WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE TO SECURE FUNDING FOR A VICTIM'S RIGHT ADVOCATE; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

            THAT the City Commission  hereby authorizes the Police Department to apply for and accept, if awarded, a Federal Grant with the Department of Justice to secure funding for a Victim’s Right Advocate.

 THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately.
