Subject:                      Resolution Authorizing 2007 Bureau of Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends approval to apply for and accept this grant, if awarded for $25,526.00.

Analysis:

 The United States Department of Justice Bureau of Justice Assistance advised the City of Leesburg that grant funds of $25,526.00 are available to the City of Leesburg under the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program.    These grant funds will be used to purchase and install six (6) digital in-car video recording systems.  The City does not have digital recording systems so this is a new technology initiative. The systems will assist in maintaining our Police Department’s professional image as well as community credibility.  The systems will also aid in increasing officer safety.

Options:

1.  Apply for and accept the grant of $25,526.00 with no grant matching funds required or;

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate.

Fiscal Impact: 

The funds from this grant of $25,526.00 will be used to purchase six (6) digital in-car video recording systems.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA AUTHORIZING POLICE DEPARTMENT PERSONNEL TO APPLY FOR AND IF AWARDED, ACCEPT THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, BUREAU OF JUSTICE ASSISTANCE EDWARD BYRNE MEMORIAL JUSTICE ASSISTANCE GRANT (JAG) FOR $25,526 TO BE USED TO PURCHASE AND INSTALL SIX (6) DIGITAL IN-CAR VIDEO RECORDING SYSTEMS; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

            THAT the Police Department and the Interim City Manager are hereby authorized apply for and, if awarded, accept the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program for $25,526 for purchase and installation of six digital in-car video recording systems.  .

 THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately.
