Subject:                      Resolution recognizing City Government Week

 

 

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends endorsement of a Resolution recognizing City Government Week, October 21-27, 2007, and encouraging all citizens to support the celebration and corresponding activities.

 

Analysis:

City Government Week is part of an ongoing effort sponsored by the Florida League of Cities to raise public awareness about the services cities perform and to educate the public on how city government works. 

 

During the City’s Sesquicentennial Celebration, October is Government/Law Enforcement month.  Therefore, it is the perfect time to celebrate City Government Week.

 

Options:

1.  Approve endorsing the City Government Week Resolution; or

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG RECOGNIZING CITY GOVERNMENT WEEK, OCTOBER 21-27, 2007, AND ENCOURAGING ALL CITIZENS TO SUPPORT THE CELEBRATION AND CORRESPONDING ACTIVITIES; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.   

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

 

WHEREAS, city government is the government closest to most citizens, and the one with the most direct daily impact upon its residents; and

 

WHEREAS, city government is administered for and by its citizens, and is dependent upon public commitment to and understanding of its many responsibilities; and

 

WHEREAS, city government officials and employees share the responsibility to pass along their understanding of public services and their benefits; and

 

WHEREAS, Florida City Government Week is a very important time to recognize the important role played by city government in our lives; and

 

WHEREAS, this week offers an important opportunity to spread the word to all the citizens of Florida that they can shape and influence this branch of government which is closest to the people; and

 

WHEREAS, the Florida League of Cities and its member cities have joined together to teach students and other citizens about municipal government through a variety of different projects and information; and

 

WHEREAS, Florida City Government Week offers an important opportunity to convey to all the citizens of Florida that they can shape and influence government through their civic involvement.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Commission of Leesburg, Florida:

 

            Section 1.          That the City of Leesburg does encourage all citizens, city government officials and employees to do everything possible to ensure that this week is recognized and celebrated accordingly.

 

            Section 2.          That the City of Leesburg does encourage educational partnerships between city government and schools.   

 

 

Section 3.          That the City of Leesburg does support and encourage all city governments to actively promote and sponsor “Florida City Government Week”.

           

 PASSED AND RESOLVED this 8th day of October, 2007, by the City Commission of the City of Leesburg, Florida.
