Subject:                      Resolution Accepting a Workforce Central Florida Grant for firefighter training

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends acceptance of a Workforce Central Florida grant not to exceed $5,575 to provide half the cost of training for firefighters.

Analysis:

There is an on-going need for firefighters to maintain proficiency in technical skills required for safe fire-rescue operations. This grant will pay for 50% of the training costs for firefighters who attend training in Tactics & Strategy I & II, Building Construction for the Fire Service, Fire Service Hydraulics, Paramedic 2, Rope Rescue Operations, Managing Mid-rise Apartment Fires, and Hazardous Materials Technician.

Workforce Central Florida recently changed their agreement period from a 1-year period to a 6-month period, necessitating this additional application. This Workforce Central Florida grant is a continuation of training that was previously approved by City Commission (Resolution 7922) in June of 2007 for Paramedic 1 and special operations training. An additional application will soon be filed to take advantage of grant funding for the next six months.

Options:

1.  Accept the Workforce Central Florida grant

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

Fiscal Impact: 

Funding for this training was approved in the Fire Department budget and this grant gives the City the opportunity to recoup fifty percent of training costs (not to exceed $5,575).

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA ACCEPTING A WORKFORCE CENTRAL FLORIDA GRANT FOR FIREFIGHTER TRAINING AND RATIFYING THE SIGNATURE OF DIVISION CHIEF JAMES FRAZIER; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

            THAT the City Commission hereby ratifies the signature of Division Chief James Frazier on the agreement with Workforce Central Florida whose address is 1411 South 14^th Street, Leesburg, Florida, 34748 accepting a grant to provide funds for training and providing 50% matching funds.

 THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately.
