Staff recommends approval of two resolutions renaming a segment of Meadows Avenue, south 15th Street and all of Truman Avenue to Lee Meadows Avenue, and renaming a segment of Meadows Avenue to Yellow Jacket Way.
At the April 28, 2008 City Commission meeting, a resolution was presented to rename the entire Meadows Avenue to Yellow Jacket Way at the request of Leesburg High School as the senior class project for the 2006 graduating class. Commissioner Henderson brought to staff and the Commission’s attention the historic significance of the road’s name. The motion to approve the resolution did not receive a second. Mayor Christian recommended adding Mr. Meadows’ first name to emphasize the importance of the street name (see attached historical summary).
The street name change of Meadows Avenue to Lee Meadows Avenue will include all of Truman Avenue from College Street to Meadows Avenue and a segment of Meadows Avenue from Truman Avenue to the intersection of south 15th Street and a segment of south 15 th Street from Meadows Avenue to Vine Street. The segment from Vine Street to College Street will become Lee Meadows Avenue (see map exhibit).
The street name change of Meadows Avenue to Yellow Jacket Way will be for the segment of Meadows Avenue that runs west of the intersection of south 14 th Street to south 15th Street (see map exhibit.
The GIS Division has confirmed that the names “Lee Meadows Avenue” and “Yellow Jacket Way” are not duplication’s of any existing City streets. The only property along these streets is owned by the Lake County School Board (1401 Meadows Avenue) and the City of Leesburg. This name change will not affect any other property owners. Section 25-614 of the City Code addresses changing of street names.
1. Approve the two resolutions to rename a segment of Meadows Avenue, south 15th Street, and all of Truman Avenue to Lee Meadows Avenue, and approve the request to rename a segment of Meadows Avenue that runs west of the intersection of south 14th Street to south 15th Street to Yellow Jacket Way or;
2. Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate
The proposed street name changes will result in the need for four (4) new street signs to be installed at a cost of approximately $600.00.
