Subject:                      Resolution accepting grant funds from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to defray the cost of ballistic vests

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends the accepting grant funds of $6,930.00 to defray the total cost of $13,860.00 for ballistic vests.

Analysis:

The grant will continue to help fund the purchase of new and replacement ballistic vests for police officers as it has in years past.

Options:

1.  Accept  the grant award to defray the cost of future ballistic vest purchases; or

2.   Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

Fiscal Impact: 

Each vest costs approximately $495.00. The grant will defray the cost of 28 vests totaling $13,860.00.  The grant funding will provide $6,930.00, half of the total cost. The remaining balance, $6,930.00 will come from the general fund and has been included in the draft 2008-09 budget.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA AUTHORIZING THE LEESBURG POLICE DEPARTMENT TO ACCEPT THE GRANT AWARD OF $6,930.00 FROM FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF LAW ENFORCEMENT TO DEFRAY THE TOTAL COST OF $13,860.00 FOR BALLISTIC VESTS; AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

            THAT the Police Department is hereby authorized to accept the grant if $6,930.00 to defray the cost of ballistic vests from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement

 THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately.
