Subject:                      Resolution Applying for and accepting Grant Funding from WorkForce Central Florida, Inc.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff recommends approval to apply for and accept grant funding, if our application is approved from  WorkForce Central Florida, Inc.  Fifty percent of the tuition expense will be paid by WorkForce Central Florida for five electrical workers enrolled in the Apprentice Lineman Educational Program at Lake Sumter Community College and sixty-three firefighters for the Mid-Rise Apartment Fire Program at Lake Technical.

Analysis:

In prior years, the City fully funded the educational expenses for electrical workers enrolled in the Apprentice Lineman Program administered by the Lake Sumter Community College.  This will be the third year the City has applied and will receive grant funding. 

Options:

1.  Approval to apply for and accept funding, if approved, from WorkForce Central Florida, Inc. 

2.  Such alternative action as the Commission may deem appropriate

Fiscal Impact: 

The City intends to send five apprentice linemen to the training program and 63 fire fighters for a  total cost of $19,395.95, which is included in the fiscal year budget 2008-09. If awarded, the grant will pay 50% of the total cost of the training of $9,697.97.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF       LEESBURG, FLORIDA APPLYING FOR AND ACCEPTING GRANT FUNDING, IF APPROVED, FROM WORKFORCE CENTRAL FLORIDA INC. FOR FIFTY PERCENT OF THE TUITION EXPENSE FOR FIVE ELECTRICAL WORKERS ENROLLED IN THE APPRENTICE LINEMAN PROGRAM AT LAKE SUMTER COMMUNITY COLLEGE AND SIXTY-THREE FIRE FIGHTERS FOR THE MID-RISE APARTMENT FIRE PROGRAM AT LAKE TECHNICAL; AND PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF LEESBURG, FLORIDA:

           THAT the Mayor and City Clerk are hereby authorized to execute an agreement with WorkForce Central Florida, Inc. whose address is 1097 Sand Pond Road, Suite 1009, Lake Mary, Florida 32746 for matching funds for the Electric Department’s Apprentice Lineman Education Program, not to exceed $$9,695.97

 THAT this resolution shall become effective immediately.
